Today I will take you with us on trip to one of the most authentic villages in Flanders (Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) which brings you back a few hundreds years – Oud-Rekem which was proclaimed Flanders’ most beautiful village in 2008. Besides picturesque walk, you will find here some points of interest such as a very old pharmacy-museum, several churches and a castle.
Start with visiting the museum church Sint Peter located in Groenplaats where you can climb the wooden stairs to arrive to the underfoot part for a bird perspective view of Our-Rekem. The church was built in the first half of the 18th century and reconstructed half a century after due to fire. The church is open every weekend afternoon and every day during summer months.
On the same square a few steps further, you can visit the pharmacy museum with doctor’s cabinet from 1820 where you can see authentic products, herbs, oils, pipettes, and others from the 19th century or even the old time’s medical tools used in the cabinet such as a birth labor chair, dentist’s chair or medical books which we found quite interesting.
The castle Aspremont-Lynden from the end of 16th century is where the counts of the country Rekem lived. During the French times at the end of 18th century it served as a military hospital, later as beggers’ asylum and in the 20th century as a psychiatric institution. Nowadays it is a protected monument.
In its shadow, on the little square, you can have a drink and a small bite in one of the cafe’s near by the castle. We had a quick lunch here with delicious avocado toast and ham&cheese toast for the little one.
Beyond the entrance gate to Oud-Rekem, you can enjoy some wonderful natural walks in the natural reserve Oude Weerd or Hochterbampd. And if you are into biking, make sure you plan a bike trip discovering the extended bike paths through the region.
